Calda Pizza - Pizza History
My family and I love Pizza, especially Calda Pizza. We usually dine in one of their Pizza Restaurant branch in Escario St,, Cebu City, Calda Pizza has also a branch in Lapu-Lapu City, mactan. Eating pizza is one of the ways we treat ourselves when we get achievements, even little ones. Sometimes we eat just pizza for our meal, no rice as what we used to. One day, I was wondered why pizza exist, where it originated, when was the first pizza baked. This "get-to-know-pizza-more" questions circles around my head and end up on researching on Google. So, here's what I found about Pizza.
As per Wikipedia, "Pizza is an oven-baked, flat, round bread typically topped with a tomato sauce, cheese and various toppings. The modern pizza was invented in Naples, Italy, and the dish has since become popular in many parts of the world." Well, this is a modern day description of Pizza.
The first pizzas by ancient Greeks are made with flat breads topped with herbs and spices and no tomato sauce. Yes, they don't have tomatoes back then until 16th century.
In 1889, baker Raffaele Esposito of Naples, baked a pizza when Queen Marghareta of Savoy visited Naples. That pizza was full of colors as an Italian flag topped with green basil, mozzarella cheese, buffalo milk and red tomatoes. He called it Pizza Margherita.
Pizza in America
In 1897, pizza was inroduced in New York when Gennarq Lombardi migrated to New York and opened a store where he bakes and sells pizza. Later on, Lombardi opended several outlets within the city.
There were other Italian immigrants to United States who opened pizza restaurants in other parts of the United States. During World War II, in the United States, pizza was served to Italians. Soldiers and Sailors discovered Pizza as the food of the masses.
In 1943, a true American Pizza was born by Ike Sewell in Windy City, Chicago. It was called Deep-Dish Pizza. It has thin crust and topped with many layers of cheese, meats, veggies and sauce.
Shortly afer that, gas-fired pizza ovens were made which helps pizza businesses much easier and more affordable. This results in the boom of pizza restaurants in United States.
With this American pizza boom comes fast-food and delivery pizza chains. In 1954, Shakey's Pizza opened in California. In 1958, Pizza Hut was launched in Kansas. In Michigan last 1959, a pizza chain called Little Caesar was opened and Domino's opened in 1960 in the same city.
During nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when Italians migrated to other countries, they brought their pizza receipes and eventually started putting up a pizza restaurants who attracted lots of neighborhood and visitors alike.
These pizza restaurants got a boost after World War II. Many people from abroad acquired the taste of pizzas and when after returning home, they were looking for pizzerias in the own country.
Pizza are now more impacted to local cultures, toppings have now more variants.
